Java Engineer (Productivity)

Development   York, United Kingdom

Description

Software Engineer – Engineering Productivity

Originally founded in the UK and now headquartered in San Francisco, Anaplan has offices globally. We are a rapidly expanding, $1billion Silicon Valley tech firm on a mission to revolutionise how companies analyse and plan their businesses. And it’s working – we’re already trusted by hundreds of Fortune 2000 companies and we’ve only just begun.

Anaplan is a multi award-winning, pre-IPO technology company. Our culture is open, honest and inclusive, we have Silicon Valley sensibilities, strong ties to Europe and producing seriously scalable and powerful business software.

As any company grows, it is difficult to maintain the buzz that you had with a small team moving quickly towards a common goal, and it can often feel like you’re just a cog in huge machine.

At Anaplan we want to ensure that all of our engineers get to work in that small team environment no matter how big the company grows. It’s very easy to say, but at Anaplan we are putting our money where our mouth is and investing in an Engineering Productivity team. This team will produce the glue that enables individual teams to focus on what’s important to them, and automate away all of the infrastructure work required to move code from developer’s machines into production.

This is DevOps on steroids – the Engineering Productivity team is made up of engineers following their natural instincts to write code to get jobs done. Yes, we work with tools like GitHub, Jenkins, Nexus and AWS, but we don’t use the UI to complete a task, we write a tool – which we can then roll out to our feature teams across the globe. If you like the sound of writing tools for other developers, and being able to really understand your customer (because they are just like you) then this is the role you’ve been looking for.

As we’re working on a wide variety of jobs, you’ll have a chance to use all sorts of technologies and we always looking for ways to innovate. With this in mind we don’t have a strong list of mandatory skills – what’s most important to us this is the mindset to get things done with enthusiasm and efficiency. We like clean, well-tested code, that we can put to use asap, and continually and iteratively improve our toolset and thus the productivity of the engineering group as a whole.

Of course you want to know what technologies we use, so here are some of the languages/technologies we use and things we write:

  • Groovy, Scala
  • SpringBoot/Cloud, DropWizard, Play Framework
  • AWS, OpenStack
  • Rest/HTTP – servers and clients to common APIs like GitHub, Nexus, Jira, Jenkins etc
  • Centos, Windows, Mac, Vagrant, Docker, VirtualBox
  • Plugins for Jenkins, Jira, Nexus, Eclipse, IntelliJ etc.

Obviously experience with any or all of the above is great, but really we just want people who are really keen to make tools for other developers. In fact, it doesn’t matter whether you’re just out of university or are a hardened hacker, our primary requirement is a genuine enthusiasm for software

  • Measuring, maintaining, and reporting appropriate SLAs across products to internal and external partners.
  • Coordinate with customers and partner teams when required to help unblock teams and achieve consensus across teams to deliver on engineering-wide objectives.

  • Develop strategies to scale out MySQL deployment in multiple DCs, required

We’re trusted by hundreds of Fortune 2000 companies, and building on the back of our success, the sky is the limit to what we could be doing!

Now, we need outstanding junior JavaScript Engineers to be part of our rapidly expanding global engineering effort.

Anaplan offers the best of both worlds - we have all the perks of a start-up based out of Silicon Valley, we are able to change and adapt quickly but we also have the support of a highly successful, market-leading company. We invest in our staff, providing training from leaders in their fields, send our Engineers to tech conferences all around the world to ensure we stay ahead of the curve and know all about the latest tools and technologies, and a lot of our team have families, so we really appreciate the need for a flexible working environment and a good work/life balance

ABOUT:

Our production system is written in Dojo which we’re in the process of re-building using React with a focus on fixing the quality of our automated testing. The data we work with is large and complicated so performance is a particular focus. QA work closely with Developers, and they use Java to functionally test the application with Selenium.

We use the best of breed tooling to aid collaboration: GitHub Enterprise, Jenkins, WebStorm, IntelliJ and Eclipse. We use Slack for messaging worldwide. We operate in Agile teams with JavaScript Engineers building the main application and the Java Engineers building the backend - everyone runs whichever OS they prefer with a choice of equipment.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

We are pretty flexible for our junior Engineers when it comes to skills and experience - a hunger for learning and technology, a positive attitude and at least an understanding in some of the following is enough to start with....of course, the more of these points that resonate with you, the better!

  • JavaScript, CSS3, React, Dojo, ES6, Sass, Webpack, Gulp, Maven, Git, Redux, MobX, SVG, Java

We use a lot of technology and things change quickly in JavaScript - we don’t expect you to know all of the above but the more you know well the quicker you will get started.

  • You write code that is tested and testable and you take responsibility for the quality of your work.
  • You’ll be producing production code for a huge cloud platform - we need confidence in every piece of code we release so testing is very important to us and it should be for you too.
  • Experience of using raw JavaScript:

We don’t expect you to write code in raw JS day to day, but we expect you to have worked with JavaScript long enough to have implemented a lot of what libraries do so you can write high performance code, fix legacy issues and if you’re unlucky, pick up an IE bug.

  • A knowledge of major front end development frameworks.
  • We use React and some of the newer tools so we expect you to have knowledge of how web applications are being built and an opinion on what’s good and what to avoid.
  • Comfortable with Git - easily understanding branching, merging, pull requests. We use Git and Github Enterprise, we branch a lot and do pull requests. We don’t expect you to know every git command off by heart but an understanding of working in a team with Git is a must.
  • You know how to build large scale web applications.
  • You're comfortable designing with other Engineers, talking about things like performance optimization, design patterns, CSS layout strategies, node, npm, CI etc.
  • You enjoy working closely with others, teaching and learning and are comfortable showing your work.
  • We have a lot you could improve, so we want people that can use their initiative, share what they’ve done with the team, enable others, do some mentoring and take a lead.
  • Professional attitude to work.
  • We expect you to be a great communicator with anyone in the business - able to present your ideas, discuss them, work closely with QA and UX as well as listening to others. You understand the trade-offs and can be pragmatic and trustworthy.

JUST A FEW OF THE THINGS WE OFFER:

  • A beautiful, award-winning working environment in a Grade II listed, converted warehouse right on the river in the centre of York.
  • Excellent salaries, bonuses and stock options - we’re serious about attracting the very best in the industry.
  • A long list of comprehensive benefits worthy of a leading Silicon Valley tech firm.
  • A rewarding, progressive career with a company that values diversity, a good work/life balance and invests in you.
  • The opportunity to work with and learn from a diverse mix of of exceptionally skilled people.
  • A family friendly work environment - many of our team have children so everyone knows what to expect…we also have Summer and Christmas parties just for the little ones!

  • Casual dress code, a (discounted) gym right across the road, showers, bike storage, health & fitness clubs and plenty of places to think!
  • The chance to be part of the continued growth and success of a pre-IPO, hyper-growth company worth over $1billion and in the top 30 global Cloud Tech companies (Forbes, 2016)
