Gartner recently launched a category, Strategic Corporate Performance Management (SCPM)2 and Anaplan is excited to be positioned the furthest for Vision in the Visionaries Quadrant in the MQ for SCPM.
What is Gartner’s new category?
According to a 2015 Gartner report, “CPM has experienced significant innovation over the past five years, and the traditional CPM constructs that we have been using need to be modified.”3 Traditional CPM solutions have been most successful at providing control, compliance, and transparency for budgeting and planning, rather than orchestrating overall enterprise performance. According to Gartner, “SCPM enables the capabilities of financial planning and operational planning with an IFP framework, as these tools can be more closely integrated with other planning areas, such as position-based planning, sales forecasting and demand planning, IT financial management, and capital planning.”4 Operational plans (sales forecasting, demand planning, IT financial management, capital planning, workforce planning) linked to financial plans will reveal new opportunities for the CIO and CFO to innovate, resulting in additional organizational insight and greater agility. Additionally, “Although the majority of live CPM implementations today primarily address the tactical accounting needs of the office of finance (mostly FCPM and budgeting), the combination of cloud, mobile, social and IMC forces is enabling new SCPM capabilities that must be considered.”5
Technology advancements drove the need for a new Magic Quadrant category
Due to advances in technology, such as Anaplan’s in-memory computing engine, corporate planning is at a tipping point. Traditional financial planning, budgeting, and consolidations applications, often based upon chart-of-account structures, don’t deliver on the promise of performance management. This is where Anaplan comes into play.
