How My Life Changed in the Last Few Months – Thank You Anaplan!

I’m a few months into my role leading Anaplan Customer Excellence for the Asia-Pacific region, after finally moving away from traditional Enterprise Performance Management software (I’m not sure about the origin of this term, as I think performance should be led and not managed, but let’s go with it for the time being).

This is an important  blog post for me. Work takes 70% of my day (and by extension, life), so I want it to be a pleasant experience, both for me and most importantly for my customers.

In my last job, I never liked talking about hardware or databases or other propriety technology jargon which were required to make the product work at all. I would usually end up putting in a lot of  hard work to understand those even though those were not primary functions of my role.

Here are few reasons, why life has changed for the better since joining Anaplan:

Speed matters

I love speed and hate to see things moving slow. Anaplan provides a platform with super performance that delivers speed. It can easily compare with Formula 1 Car. What used to take 6 -8 months to achieve using traditional EPM products can now be achieved in just 6-8 weeks … it’s not an exaggeration to say that it might take even less time than that! Speed is sexy. Slow costs you money. So, to be able execute fast matters a lot!.

Less dependency means more freedom

When I’m working on a particular requirement, I prefer to execute all the tasks end-to-end with least dependency on programmers, technology experts, network folks etc. With Anaplan, I can accomplish complex tasks completely on my own. This gives me a lot of freedom in terms of the time and flexibility.

Happiness all around

When was the last time that software from a giant ERP company pleased you with their new release? Instead, things tend to become even more complex with every release, making the solution more consultant-friendly, as opposed to friendly for the Financial Analyst or a Group Finance Team.  While working for Anaplan, my customers and I truly enjoy the experience and take pleasure in working on the platform. After a fairly long time in this industry, I am finally loving the stuff that I am doing.

Liberation  for my users

At my previous companies, my users were always at the mercy of the technical experts of the consulting organization. With Anaplan, for the first time they are truly in charge of the business rules, models, and reports, which are an essential part of their daily functions. They look forward to taking ownership as opposed to being scared of the outcome of their activities/ Anaplan is truly bringing the ownership culture to an organization – isn’t that amazing?

Impossible said, “I am possible!”

I always liked working on the hardest problems. However, with other solutions,  there have been many times that executing complex process requirements meant getting IT involved to script, code, and develop complex programs and process chains. With Anaplan, the same level of complexity can be met by the business user writing formulas that are extremely easy to put in the platform.

Productivity gains

Anaplan empowered me to single handedly run 2-3 projects of different complexity levels. This has made me a veritable superhero within my organization. It never feels like a stressful task; working on the Anaplan platform is pure joy.

I can stand up for first time, and say with complete honesty to my customers, “I can do anything for you, just let me know what you want!”

Did I mention the excellent folks that provide LiveChat, Email, Phone, and Skype support? It is phenomenal to work with happy people all around.

For the first time, users can stop worrying about the workings of the technology because there are specialized people on our end to take care of it. It’s almost like gathering with friends to watch a big sports game. Instead of spending the time figuring out how to set up the tv and cable box, you can just sit back and enjoy the show.

A note to my customers clinging to the “old stuff:” Times are changing, and you need to change with the times in order to stay relevant.

With my work now and the amount of happiness that I am enjoying today, this is the place where I want to be. Anaplan is like the song from Lenka: “Everything at Once”!

  1. Excellent blog, could not put it myself better.

    Having seen Anaplan I felt the same, only difference I called it a Porsche comparing to others.
    For me the most important part could be anything is possible in the simplest and fastest way as it should be and you can feel that you are giving the customer best product they can have in the market rather than best of the products that the consultancy can offer.

    Having seen Umesh stressed with multiple BPC projects with customer, process or product issues, I am very happy that he found peace with Anaplan.

    Hoping to follow him in the nearest future giving fast and working solutions to many more customers choosing Anaplan.
